Hong Kong and its surrounding islands and territories were leased by China to Britain for 99 years in 1898.
Hong Kong ceased being a British colony and became a Special Administrative Region under Chinese rule on 1st July 1997.
The name Hong Kong comes from the Cantonese “Heung Gong” or “fragrant harbour”, a reference to “sweeter” fresh water of the Pearl River estuary.
The Pearl River is named for the large number of pearl-like shells lining the river bed as it runs through Guangzhou.
The Peak Tram, a funicular railway still running from Central to Victoria Peak has been in operation since 1888.
The Mid-Levels escalator is the world’s longest escalator system, running over 800m and an elevation of 135m. The full journey takes 20 minutes.
