Darfur, Contested land

Janjaweed is a local corruption of the Arabic phrase 'djiin jawad' meaning 'devils on horseback'.

Darfur covers 500,000km², an area the same size as Spain.

Darfur means 'home of the Furs’, referring to the Fur tribe who live there.

2.7 million Darfuris have been displaced by the conflict.

The UN states that 300,000 people have died due to disease, starvation and violence in Darfur since 2003.

A quarter of Darfur’s population is said to be malnourished.
