Athabasca Oil Sands, Alberta

The oil sands development covers 550km², an area one third the size of Los Angeles.

It takes two tonnes of oil sands to make one barrel of oil weighing 137kg.

More than 456,000 jobs in Canada are linked to the oil sands.

Alberta has 173 billion barrels worth of oil with the potential to be mined.

Bitumen from the oil sands can be refined to make anything from fuel, to plastic, to toothpaste.

Athabasca contains enough oil to meet Canada’s current oil demand for almost 400 years.
