San Luis Valley

The La Garita caldera explosion produced 5,000 times more volcanic ash and debris than the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption.

The Mosca solar photovoltaic plant was the largest in the US when it was built in 2007.

Colorado has committed to deliver 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020 – the San Luis Valley will have an important part in this.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest dune field in America.

The valley floor lies six kilometres below sea level, but has been infilled with a large amount of sediment and volcanic ash over millions of years.

Native Americans named the Great Sand Dunes as “sowapophe-uvehe”, "the land that moves back and forth".
