Lava Butte is one of hundreds of formations on the flanks of Newberry Volcano caused by lava bursting out of vents.

Bend is one of only three cities in the continental US to have an extinct volcano within city limits - Pilot Butte is an extinct cinder cone.

Pilot Butte was formed by lava forcing its way out of vents in the side of a volcano, resulting in a small cinder cone.

Mount Bachelor is another nearby volcano to Bend. It is part of the Cascades Volcanic Arc and last erupted between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago.
